Dattatreya Hosabale (born mid 1950s) is the General Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh – India (RSS), the highest executive position in the organization. Born in a small farming village in Karnataka’s Shivamogga district, he holds a master’s degree in English Literature and speaks six languages including Kannada, Hindi, English, Tamil, Marathi, and Sanskrit.
There is a growing recognition that decisions in science and technology—especially in areas such as AI, climate, biotechnology, and neuroscience—carry profound ethical, social, and political implications that extend beyond technical expertise alone. In this context, Hosabale brings immense value through his decades of experience and deep immersion in social work. Well connected across a wide spectrum of cultural, spiritual, and service organizations, he offers a perspective that meaningfully complements the insights of technical, scientific, and policy leaders.
Hosabale brings a rare and profound understanding of India’s civilizational depth, rooted in lived experience, scholarship, and sustained social engagement. With decades of immersion in Indian culture, social fabric, and linguistic diversity, he serves as a bridge between timeless wisdom and contemporary relevance.
Deeply grounded in the nuances of Bharatiya traditions, Hosabale has engaged extensively with communities across regions. This has given him firsthand insight into India’s pluralistic social structures, value systems, and grassroots realities. His lived connect enables him to interpret culture not as an abstraction, but as a living, evolving force shaping society.
As a mentor, Hosabale offers:
At Param Foundation, Hosabale contributes as a thought anchor and cultural guide, helping shape initiatives that are not only innovative but also deeply rooted in India’s knowledge traditions.
Hosabale is the founding editor of the Kannada magazine Aseema and has maintained friendships with literary figures across ideological lines. He is widely regarded as one of the intellectually engaged leaders in the country.
Hosabale was elected General Secretary in March 2021 and re-elected in 2024. Under his leadership, the RSS coordinated a massive volunteer relief effort during COVID-19 — mobilizing over 500,000 volunteers, distributing food to millions, supplying oxygen beds, and assisting at thousands of vaccination centers. He also led the organization through its centenary year in 2025, calling for broader social engagement and holistic national development.
Hosabale remains a central and consequential figure in Indian socio-political discourse — viewed by supporters as a modernizing, service-oriented leader, connected with a wide range of organizations in the social service sector working across various needs and communities.
As the RSS marked its centenary in 2025, Hosabale articulated a vision of expanded outreach, calling on volunteers to engage all sections of society in the mission of national service. He has emphasized themes of social harmony, inter-faith dialogue — including a high-profile meeting with the Dalai Lama in 2025 — and what he describes as holistic national development.
